Understanding the Baptism of Fire !

". . . He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire." - Matthew 3:11

The pursuit of a deeper spiritual meaning is older than scripture itself. It is the desire of each person to fill an emptiness within us that is crafted for the presence of God, alone. That deeper relationship is only satisfied by an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

Whereas, redemption secures our eternal life; our physical life remains in jeopardy. Jesus told his disciples that it is "essential for you that I go away", so, that the Holy Spirit can come. (John 16:7- paraphrased) John the Baptist said of Jesus that he would "Baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." (Matthew 3:11) It is the desire of our Lord that we know him in a very deep and intimate way that involes our whole being: body, soul, and spirit. He offers us that opportunity, through the baptism of fire. "Understanding the Baptism of Fire" is written to communicate, to believers, this good news and provide a scruiptural guide into his glorious new life. Enjoy.

The Holy Spirit is pictured in scripture as decending like a dove upon Jesus (Matthew 3:16) and coming upon believers as an all consuming fire. (Acts 2:3) It is through the purifying judgment given to us by the Holy Spirit that our sins are consumed (fire), we become pure as the driven snow  (Isaiah 1:18) and are invited to fly in the spirit above the fray of our cares below.

There are three metaphors in scripture applied to saints:

  1. Plants: wheat and vine branches.
  2. Sheep
  3. Eagles

These three describe the nature of the Christian experience:

  1. Plants: firmly rooted in the teaching of another saint. (1 Peter 2:2)
  2. Sheep: self feeding, following the Good Shepherd, Jesus. (Luke 9:23)
  3. Eagles: Those who soar in the spirit and not in the flesh. (Romans 8:4-5)

> Plants are stationary and soley dependant upon the soil they are planted in. (see the four types of soil in

    Mark 4:14-20)

> Sheep have limited mobility and soley dependant upon the shepherd to lead them to green patures and

    still  waters.

> Eagles are independant of others and interdependant upon the wind beneath their wings.

    * Eagles are birds of prey and their independance requires responsiblity and accountiblity, as they soar

upon the wind of the Holy Spirit.

    * When they fail in that responsibility and detach themselves from accountibility the winds become

       contrary and they are grounded.

    * While properly operating in their environment, they are anointed to seek out the lost and carry the good

news to a world who needs Jesus.

It is the purpose of this book and the hope of its author to convey to the reader the importance and requirements of spiritual growth that leads to the flight of the eagle, through the baptism of fire.
